Introduction
  • In 2006, Census Canada reported that there was over one million who identified themselves as being of Aboriginal decent. Census Canada estimated that that were 698,025 people who identified themselves as being First Nations, 389,785 as being Metis and 50,485 as being Inuit. In Ontario, there were over 242,490 people who identified themselves as Aboriginal People. (Statistics Canada)




Suicide
  • The suicide rate among the Inuit is high at six to 11 times the Canadian average. Since 1999, 27% of the death in Nunavut have been suicides. This is one of the highest rates in the world.
  • In Aboriginal communities female attempt suicide more than males. With the rates of completed suicide higher among males.
  • In the Non-Aboriginal population the average for females attempting suicide is 4% and 19% for Aboriginal females. The average for Non-Aboriginal males was 2% and 13% of Aboriginal males reporting that they attempted suicide.
  • Youth who have had a parent member attend a residential school are more likely to experience suicidal thoughts.(Khan, Saman)




Depression
  • In 1997, a survey found that 16% of First Nations living on the reserve experienced major depression. Compared to 8% of the general population.
  • A Statistics Canada survey found that only 3% of Inuit people had suffered a major depressive episode. While only 6% were at a high risk for depression.(Khan,Saman)


Alcohol and Drug Use

  • Studies have shown that:
  • 75% of residents feel alcohol use is a problem in their community.
  • 33% say that it is a problem in their own family or house hold.
  • 25% say that they have a personal problem with drugs or alcohol.
  • 66% of First Nations adults living on a reserve consumed alcohol compared to 76% of the general population who did not live on a reserve. The low number may be to the fact that those who do drink, drink heavily at one time consuming more than 5 or glasses at one time.(Khan, Saman)
